Understanding IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test of the English language proficiency of people who want to study or work in countries where English is used as the language of communication. You can take this test in almost 140 countries across the world. Moreover, it can be taken four times in a year and is normally held on Thursdays and Saturdays to ensure convenience for test seekers.

The mode for the IELTS exam can be either online or offline on paper and there is no difference in the format, content or level of difficulty between the two options. But there’s one important thing to remember. You need to choose your module carefully- Academic or General Training, depending on the purpose of your taking the test.

Academic Module

If you wish to go abroad for higher education or plan to study or practice in a country where English is the medium of communication, the Academic Module is for you.

General Module

General module is meant for those planning to gain work experience, or for immigration purposes.

Why IELTS?

  • Interested in studying abroad? Having successfully taken the IELTS test, you can apply to many universities worldwide and all universities and colleges in the UK accept IELTS test results. Taking this exam gives you a chance to study or work abroad.
  • The IELTS exam is outlined in a way to assess various English language skills like speaking, listening, writing and reading. This prepares you for many real life situations, whether it is to talk to your clients at work, mates at school or even just during a trip to a foreign country.
  • IELTS covers both American English and British English. As a result, IELTS gives you a great opportunity to train your ear to different native English accents as the reading section of the test incorporates a mix of all of them.

IELTS Test Structure

All candidates appearing for IELTS must complete four Modules – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. This will help you to obtain an IELTS Test Report Form. The test has a total duration of 2 hours and 44 minutes. You also get a choice between Academic and General Training in the Reading and Writing Modules.
